I tend to ramble so here's the TL;DR after I typed all that junk down there.
How do I get RaceChrono to trigger my GoPro7 automatically? Should I be using standing start instead?
Should I be starting and stopping the sessions each time inbetween laps?
How do I add my GoPro7 video to the exported video for Picture-in-Picture when the only option is "link after..."?
Any protips on viewing data on the app directly after a session?
I've seen a couple of reddit posts about it, and I thought I had it handled, but at my most recent autocross I didn't capture data the way I wanted. I raced last Sunday and usually have a video uploaded much sooner in the week.
I was gifted a Racebox Mini S for Christmas and I couldn't get it to work with the older version of Android on my LG. So I had to switch to a Pixel 4a that I had lying around from a previous upgrade.
My previous setup was a Qstarz10 and an old LG V30 phone (plus a BLE OBD) running TA. I loved that setup, b/c you could just walk to the start, and set it at that point, then go to finish and do the same thing. As opposed to the weird arrows with RC. Then when I got ready to race, I could just hit the big ol' start button, and it would record all the OBD data, trigger my gopro, and record on the phone, while also displaying lap data, then it would automatically stop after the finish, all with just screen tap before start. I also didn't know that I needed to start the session during my course walk to use the external GPS, so when I saw that it was using the onboard GPS, I had to go back and reset start and finish on a separate coursewalk.
I know it's my first time with the app, but RaceChrono doesn't seem nearly as automated, and looks to be more trackday focused. Which is all well and good, but I'm used to running a free app that did everything I wanted, so I'm a bit disappointed to have paid for pro, and still have issues with the app.
Everything seemed to pair up smoothly. I got my camera and OBD connected fine the week prior, and did a few laps around the yard with everything.
However the next problem arose when I went to output the data, I felt like a moron b/c I couldn't just grab the data and manipulate it the same way I've done with RaceRender all these years.
My gopro wasn't on sometimes b/c I either didn't start it manually, or I pressed stop instead of record. There was also at least one instance where I didn't manually stop it, and the camera kept recording while my car sat in paddock.
Idk how to make it trigger automatically like TA did.
When I tried to export my fastlap, the video started while I was already on course, and I had to manually guess at the start time to get the staging and shutdown video segments, which is where I usually overlay subtitles about the race. I learned this after wasting a few hours exporting videos with different settings.
THEN when I finally got the video off my gopro, the app wouldn't let me link the video for PIP overlay. The only option in the dropdown menu is "Link after..." No idea what to do with that since it seemed to just tack the gopro footage onto the end of the exported video. I wound up putting the exported file and my gopro footage on my laptop and doing the PiP with shotcut.
Directly after the race I was comparing data with a friend after the race, and he got right to the min/max speed traces that I was looking for in RC. I eventually found them in some spare time at work yesterday, but I was having trouble advancing the session time while looking at the GPS trace to compare min/max.
I've already rambled enough and I feel like some of these issues might need separate posts, and I can fully acknowledge that alot of it is user error, but I really didn't expect to have this much trouble with RC since I had such a seemless experience with TA.
