Best camera for easy workflow

Been using an old DJI camera for a while but finding workflow a pain. Starting/stopping camera, transferring files from SD card to PC, then to phone, and finally messing about to get a good sync. It’s enough to stop me bothering!

So what’s the best (or better still “good enough” and not too expensive) action camera that will let me auto start camera, transfer direct to iPhone, and finally auto sync. Someone suggested a GoPro 11 Black, but not a newer version because they are not reliable? New DJI’s are cheaper but do they have a good workflow. Difficult because lots of what I find online is years old!

If relevant I’m using a RaceBox micro for my GPS.

Ausyoz The v10.1 beta improves the DJI use case considerably when used with the GPS remote. This allows automatic sync using the GPS data saved to the video files through the remote. I'd get the remote and stick with the camera little bit longer.

The v10.1 improves the GoPro support too, with GoPro 13 remote control support.

Ausyoz do you need to transfer the files from SD to PC to phone? there are card readers that just hook up to your phone (usb c, or there are adaptors from usb A to lightning)

I've got a GoPro 10 black (I dont think 11 and 12 have internal gps) and the workflow for me is as follows:

start/resume the racechrono session and turn on the gopro (to get the gps set in)
pull up to the start line and start the gopro recording
finish my timeattack run, turn off gopro recording, turn off racechrono recording

after this you take out the sd card from the gopro (there are "easy to remove" battery covers on ali) - or you can transfer it over camera wifi but that takes forever, copy the file to my phone

import the file to racechrono, add it to the session, and then you can link it via a button above the video and just finetune it by couple of ms if you think its off (having the phone in sight on your onboard helps a lot with that), and then you can export it with the racechrono overlay, save that .mp4 to the sdcard and upload that wherever you want from your pc - end result here

there probably is a simpler workflow if you start the recording through the app, which is possible with gopros (at least), but I personally like to have the control of the camera separated, and also to have the telemetry fullscreen on the phone from the getgo to be sure everything is running as it should..

its probably not what you asked for exactly but just a bit of insight how someone else works with the available equipment..

My camera is a DJI Action 3 so not compatible with remote and in need of upgrade anyway. So question is what’s good to get now, a GoPro 11 black (or newer?) or get a newer DJI Action plus the remote. I realise there probably isn’t a single correct answer here! Maybe they are both very similar in workflow? Thanks for the advice.

I do not like DJI firmware/software, so I'd get either GoPro 13 (internal GPS) or Insta360 x5 with GPS remote depending on my use case. GoPro 13 is much better integrated to RaceChrono, but I like Insta360 product more.
