Folks... just dropped a list of 53 new CAN channels confirmed to work on my 718 CGTS over on 718Forum.
This post is a sequel to the very active thread Successfully hacked my 718 GTS CAN Bus for RaceChrono Data which presents the original work that was done by @webkris and later myself on how to physically tap the 718 CAN bus. @webkris also has a nice series of writeups on his work over at planetkris | Sit back, relax, and enjoy the crash….
It's 3 months of work which I won't bother repeating here. Just making all the CAN-huggers over here aware.
Perhaps the most interesting / exciting thing about this drop of CAN signals is the fact that I have strong reason to believe that both the original @webkris list and the entirety of the list I am publishing today is broadly applicable across Porsche 992.1 at least (possibly 991.2 and 981 as well), Audi platforms since 2016 including B8, C7, D4, Q5 and successors, as well as VW platforms generally since as early as the 2010 Golf.
I know this because in addition to back-engineering signals from raw CAN, over the last six months I’ve located on the open internet a variety of VAG DBCs and explanatory text documents and spreadsheets. These documents all make clear that since at least 2016 their CAN signal definitions have a very wide scope. For instance, there are references to Audi, VW, Bentley, Porsche and even Lamborghini in the course of a single document. I actually have documentation on over 1500 CAN signals for VAG platforms, from which I have down selected, tested and now published the 50-plus most relevant. I'm working on more but this drop is pretty complete.
This is not all that surprising considering that (1) there are a limited number of ECU providers in the world; (2) manufacturer’s cost-cutting push to reduce and share parts like ECUs across as many platforms as possible within a given marque; and (3) the industry-wide consolidation of formerly standalone marques under a comparatively small number of holding companies such as VAG.
So I'm specifically asking for 991.2, 992.1, 981, Audi and VW owners of recent platforms with CAN access to try some of these signals out and report back.
