RaceChrono, Go Pro black 5 and OBDLink MX Wi-Fi Will they work together

Hope someone can help, I'm not really that savvy when it comes to tech like this. I do a few track days and use my Go Pro. I want to be able to link it with my RaceChrono app but also be able to capture the gauges and performance info from the vehicle on the video. I have the OBDLink MX Wi-Fi but cant get all thee to link together. Is this an incompatibility issue and do i need the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth instead? if its not can anyone supply a link or advise for a non technical person to set this up (step by step would be great). Thanks In advance

    Hi,

You cannot use the GoPro remote control and a Wi-Fi OBD-II at the same time. I recommend using manual controls for the GoPro.

Just link the video files manually afterwards, rather than using the GoPro remote control feature. If you keep the camera's built-in GPS turned on, it will save enough GPS metadata, for the "automatic" synchronisation of the video file to work (It's the button with magnifying glass icon in the video synchronisation tools).

I recommend configuring the OBDLink Wi-Fi by keeping the "Connect Wi-Fi automatically" setting turned off. This eliminates some stuff that does not always work reliably. You'll need to connect to the reader's Wi-Fi manually each time you want to use it.

PS. The Wi-Fi reader is not nearly as easy or convenient to use as the MX+ but both will work. With the MX+ you could connect to GoPro 5, but I don't think it's entirely necessary as you can link your videos just fine otherwise too...

  • Thanks, I've just ordered the MX+ from amazon as I have been reading elsewhere that its is easier to setup and use and as i said I'm not really that up on how to do this. One n=more question, if I use the MX+ and RaceCrono app for my track day, can you recommend the best place to go to get some instructions on how to manually link the files afterwards (sorry if this feels like a dumb question)
  • It basically works so that 1) you copy the video files over to your phone 2) link the files to the session. This FAQ item contains links to instructions for both steps. Notice the linking step is one button only, when there's valid GPS data recorded within the video file. If not then it's the full synchronisation described in the video: https://racechrono.com/article/faq/do-you-support-any-other-action-cameras-than-gopro
  • Also as you're investing on your hardware already, I also recommend looking for good external GPS receiver: https://racechrono.com/article/faq/which-external-gps-should-i-buy
  • So ive done my track day and got all of the data on my RaceChrono app and the videos on my Go pro and I still cant link them. When i go into the app it says no video available. I've tried to follow the video link you sent over but the screen on the video do not look like the screens i see on my phone.

    Can you help please?

I just need some decent instructions to follow

First thing you need to do is to copy over the video files. Here's instructions for couple of ways how to do that. I recommend getting the memory card reader for that: https://racechrono.com/article/2059

The video at https://racechrono.com/article/480 looks a little different from your app, mostly the video list. The video list is now available under "Videos" button in the app. Once you found the video list in the app, check the contents of the folder "Photos app" in the list. The files you've copied over should be visible now in that list.

After that you can follow the video instructions in https://racechrono.com/article/480 to link the videos to your session. Basically you open the video file from the list that you want to synchronise. Analysis screen will open. Video window tools will have the link icon that starts the synchronisation / linking. Same as in the video.

I recommend starting from the first file of the sequence, like GPPRxxxx.MP4 or GH01xxxx.MP4 or GX01xxxx.MP4. When you link the first file, RaceChrono will link automatically the rest (GP01..., GH02... and GX02...).

  • Hi, I took your advise and I've invested in an external GPS receiver. I went for the Garmin Glo 2 as it was the most affordable. I have another track day due early august so ill give it a go there. I've connected it to my phone but how do i connect it via RaceChrono? when i check the box for external GPS receivers its not listed. Or will do i need to check internal GPS receiver and my IoS device will use the new receiver rather than its own internal one?
