External Camera control

I have a couple of questions about the control of an external camera:
1) When does the camera recording start (and end)? At the start of the session (as signalled by the "Start" button)? The laps?
2) I have non branded Gopro style camera that supports wi-fi (it uses an app called "GoPlus Cam" from Google Play Store to control the camera). I am suspicious that its wifi works like some version of GoPro (and so will allow start and stop recording at RaceChrono's command). Is there any way to quickly determine if that is true and if so which GoPro setting I should use?

    Only actual GoPro cameras are supported by this feature, other cameras will not work.

    Too bad -- not such a huge problem - I can start camera manually I have always done in the past.
